New Loving Kindness Theme in 2 parts for our Yoga Classes in Chilwell & Castle Donington

This week has seen the celebration Valentines. For many people, this means chocolates and flowers or generally being spoiled. For some, this can mean something quite different. It can make people feel isolated, alone and inadequate. So, with that,  I wanted to focus on loving kindness, but not just loving kindness to others; loving-kindness to the self.

We’ve all heard the saying “you can’t love others until you can love yourself.” But it’s so true! So from a physical perspective, we worked on heart-opening asana. Lots of loving and gentle heart openers, along with heart to earth soothing and grounding poses.

The most valuable though is the practice of Maitri

Practising Maitri helps to soften boundaries and opens our hearts. It reminds us of our commonality with everyone.

When we really see, in our mind’s eye, a person we think we don’t like, and instead of solidifying our reasons for hatred we honestly wish them happiness, good health, safety, and an easeful life, we start to forget what we thought we hated and why we felt that way in the first place. But its important that we wish these things for ourselves!!

To practice, sit comfortably, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Inhales, and exhales extended.

First, in the eyes of your mind, imagine someone you love standing in front of you. Hold their hands and look into their eyes. Say these 4 things:

May you be happy

May you be healthy

May you be safe

May you live with ease

Let that image go and take a few breaths here.

Next, imagine someone you’ve had conflict with, or someone you’ve made a negative judgement on. Stand in front of them. You may not feel ready to hold their hands or make any physical (imaginary ) contact with, so just stand, with eye contact. Now repeat those words again…

May you be happy

May you be healthy

May you be safe

May you live with ease

Let their image go, but notice what comes up. Take some breaths.

Lastly, stand in front of a mirror, in your mind’s eye (or do this for real is even better!). Repeat the words again

May I be happy

May I be healthy

May I be safe

May I live with ease

How did they all make you feel? What did you notice? What was difficult and what was easy?
